Since 2013, I have organized the FACAMP Model United Nations (FAMUN) with a team of Professors of International Relations from FACAMP. This renowned event brings together 500 students from over 60 academic institutions across Brazil and internationally. In 2017, FAMUN established a partnership with the World Federation of the United Nations Associations International Model United Nations (WIMUN) to implement the WIMUN approach. This approach upholds the highest standards in terms of rules of procedure and flow of debate, offering students an authentic and immersive experience of how the UN operates.
In addition to organizing large-scale Model UN conferences, I actively contribute to formalizing Model UN as a pedagogical tool to impart knowledge in the field of International Relations. In 2021, I wrote with Patrícia Borelli, Roberta Machado, and Talita Pinotti the book chapter “Teaching and Learning Professional Skills Through Simulations”, which was part of the book edited by Ian Lüdert on Signature Pedagogies in International Relations. During the online book launch, we discussed how a well-structured Model UN can be a practical, hands-on learning tool that engages students in problem-solving, negotiation, and collaborative decision-making, all while providing real-world context to complex global issues.
In 2023, I was invited by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) as a panelist in the online event “Higher Education and Multilateralism: Teaching and Researching about the United Nations”. In the event, I highlighted that Model UN is not only a role-play exercise – it allows students to develop critical thinking about UN diplomacy and multilateralism. Most importantly, Model UN will enable students to see themselves as UN actors who can advocate for different causes in the United Nations.
As a consequence of my strong commitment to Model UN as a powerful tool to impart knowledge in the International Relations field, I have designed and delivered specialized training courses in decision-making processes and international negotiations not only for teachers and educational institutions but also for companies and professionals looking after better ways of engaging at the international level.
