Professor Patrícia Rinaldi had the honor of delivering a virtual lecture in the International Law course taught by Professor Denise Garcia, at Northeastern University. The central theme was “Rights of Nature: Designing an Ecocentric International Protection Framework for Nature”. The lecture was intended to offer students some strategies for their practicum on negotiating a Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth to be presented at COP-30.
Professor Rinaldi explored the differences between international environmental law and Earth jurisprudence and highlighted the main Rights of Nature legal norms at the international level, such as the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth and the Kumming-Montreal Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity. Students raised excellent questions on how to engage in community-led initiatives to strengthen the rights of Nature and how to address the North-South divide concerning funding and social and cultural contexts.
